Library Program
The ability to read is vital. It paves the way to success in school, which builds self confidence and motivation to set high expectations for life. It has been proven that the best time for children to start learning to read is at the pre-school level. At Thistleoaks, we strongly endorse the sentiments of Sheila Egoff,(Librarian, Author, Educator) that children deserve from libraries and children’s books, ‘only the best,’ ‘if you think a mediocre book can do something for a child my question to you is: why can’t a better book do it better?’ Good books give all of us, especially children, entry into worlds that we may never experience personally, and into new aspects of the world we think we know.
Thistleoaks Child care centre has a warm and welcoming room dedicated solely for library use. The children have frequent opportunities to visit the library to listen and respond to stories, poems, songs and rhymes. There is a select collection of high quality fiction and non-fiction available to all teachers for classroom use. We also offer the fun and excitement of the Ontario Library Association’s Blue Spruce Reading Program for our Junior and Senior Kindergarten program.
“Library Kim” also personally visits many of the classrooms and invites them to the library for short library story times that the children value immensely on a weekly basis!
