About Thistleoaks

Our Philosophy

We believe that every child deserves a safe and caring environment in which they will grow and develop to their maximum potential.

We also believe that each child is a unique individual who brings their own abilities to the program and deserves the encouragement and space to try new things, explore new ideas and develop their own unique creativity.

We believe that by offering a flexible learning program in an environment that promotes curiosity and exploration children will develop a sense of belonging and self confidence, while giving us the ability to recognize and cater to their individual needs.

Our History

Thistleoaks was opened in 1989 with the goal of providing quality child care to Oakville's children. Today, nearly thirty years later, Thistleoaks continues to service the community; the laughs of children fill the air around the centre.

Thistleoaks is a not-for-profit centre. All money made is poured back into the centre and the staff. We have exceptionally low staff turnover, with some staff having been with us for over twenty years. Thistleoaks is overseen by a volunteer Board of Directors, largely made up of parents of past and current children in the centre.

In 2019, Thistleoaks will be celebrating its 30th Anniversary - celebrations and activities are being planned to recognize this important milestone.

Our Curriculum

Thistleoaks Child Care Centre offers a learning program that is consistent with the Ministry of Education policies, pedagogy and curriculum. Some of the Ministry documents we reference in our program include the following:

  • How Does Learning Happen? Ontario’s Pedagogy for the Early Years

  • Think Feel Act: Lessons from Research About Young Children

The educators plan a variety of activities in both large and small groups, focused on the individual interests of the children in their group. Activities are geared to each child’s age and stage of development to promote emotional, intellectual, physical, and social growth with built-in flexibility to meet each child’s unique interests and needs. This flexibility allows children to make their own choices about materials and activities during program time. As they pursue their choices and plans, children explore, ask and answer questions, solve problems, and interact with peers, program staff, students, and other adults.

We are a fully integrated centre and support all children. We have a Memorandum of Understanding with the Region of Halton that provides the centre with a Resource Consultant from the Region of Halton. Together, the educator and the Resource Consultant work to provide support and individual program plans.

The children are exposed to a variety of activities in large and small groups. Activities are geared to each child’s age and stage of development to promote emotional, intellectual, physical and social growth with built in flexibility to meet each child’s unique interests and needs. This flexibility allows children to make their own choices about materials and activities during program time.
